THE APRIL FOOLS' DAY

April Fools' Day

(letter from a distant port)

... and I tell you, now after having sailed so many seas and seen a thousand ports, and the streets, alleys and brothels of a thousand ports, that the real dangers are not the south-westerly winds and storms that rip your feet off the deck.

Not even sharks or whales that want to eat your ship.

The real evil is the white tranquillity of the patana, which fools you without you realising it; it makes you sleep.

That's the real lie: it's an April Fools' joke!
